Weather Forecasting Instruments

Study Guide

 

  1. wind vane: The arrow of a weather vane points to the direction from which the wind is blowing.

 

  1. anemometer: A weather instrument that measures wind speed.

 

  1. thermometer: An instrument that measures temperature.

 

  1. hygrometer: A weather instrument that measures moisture in the air.

 

  1. barometer: A weather instrument that measures air pressure.

 

  1. satellite: An object that moves around another object in space.

 

  1. rain gauge: An instrument for measuring rainfall. Be able to draw.

Students need to be able to write the function of each instrument.

 

Be able to indentify clouds.

Chapter 14 Vocabulary

1.     line- is a straight set of points that extends in opposite directions without ending.       

 

2.     point- is an exact location that is represented by a dot.

 

3.     ray- is a part of a line that has one endpoint and extends in one direction without ending.      ●

 

4.     Line segment- is a part of a line between two endpoints. ●                   ●

 

5.     endpoint- a point at the beginning of a ray or line segment.     ●

 

6.     Parallel- lines that are the same distance apart. They do not meet or cross each other.                 


          

7. intersecting- lines that meet or cross each other.   X

 

8. perpendicular- lines that meet or cross each other to form square corners or   90°.

 

9. angle- a geometric shape that is formed when two rays have the same endpoint.

 

10. turn- 90°

 

11. turn- 180°

 

12. full turn- 360°

 

13. degree (°) – the unit used to measure an angle.

 

14. one-degree angle- an angle that turns through  of a circle.

 

 
   
   
 

15. right angle- measures 90°

16. acute angle- measures greater than 0° and less than 90°

 

17. obtuse angle- measures greater than 90° but less than 180°

 

18. protractor- a tool used to measure angles.


 


19. right triangle- one right angle  




20. acute triangle- has three acute angles

22. quadrilaterals- has 4 sides and 4 angles  

 

23. parallelogram- has opposite sides equal in length and parallel. Opposite angles have the same size.   

4. rectangle- has opposite sides equal in length and parallel. It has 4 right angles.

 

25. rhombus- has opposite sides that in length and parallel. It has 4 equal sides.

 

26. square- has opposite sides equal in length and parallel. It has 4 right angles and 4 equal sides.

27. trapezoid- has exactly one pair of parallel sides.
